Delhi Assembly Elections LIVE Updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, and other BJP leaders on Thursday arrived at the party headquarters in New Delhi for a CEC meeting to discuss and finalise the list of candidates. The Delhi elections are slated for February 8. The battle for the national capital is a prestige war for Arvind Kejriwal’s ruling AAP, which is seeking re-election after a thumping victory in 2015 when the party won 67 of 70 seats in the Assembly.

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar today revived the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to hit out at the Congress, a day after the Centre told the Supreme Court it had accepted recommendations of the Justice Dhingra committee.

AAP, BJP Spar over Nirbhaya Convicts’ Execution | Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP  accused each other of causing delay in the hanging of Nirbhaya convicts.​ AAP MP Sanjay Singh said the saffron party is solely responsible for the delay in the execution of the convicts in the  case, after the saffron party accused the Delhi government of the same. Singh’s remark came after BJP leader and Union Minister Prakash Javadekar blamed Delhi government for the delay in the death penalty execution. “The Nirbhaya convicts are not hanged because of the delay caused by the AAP government in Delhi. This shows AAP’s soft corner for the criminals,” Javadekar said. Singh called Javadekar’s statement “funny” and “irresponsible”.

Manish Sisodia Responds to Javadekar​ | AAP leader Manish Sisodia reacted to Prakash Javadekar’s comments saying, “It was sad that a central minister is telling such a big lie on such a sensitive matter. Delhi govt wants the convicts to be hanged as as soon as possible.” He added that he wanted to ask Javadekar, “Isn’t law and order under the central government? Isnt the appointment of the Tihar DG in your hands ? ” He questioned why the home minister did not take responsibility. “Give us two days, we will   hang the convicts in two days.” He concluded by asking the Centraol government to not mislead people. “I want to ask them why have they been negligent on this,” he said.

339 FIRs Under Excise Act in Delhi | As many as 339 FIRs have been registered under the Excise Act since the enforcement of the model code of conduct in Delhi on January 6 in view of the upcoming Assembly election, officials said. Also, 347 people have been arrested under the Excise Act in connection with violation of the poll code, they said. Till January 15, as many as 47 bottles, 318 half-sized bottles and 25,681 quarter-sized bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor and 502 bottles, 194 half-sized, 89,391 quarter-sized bottles of country-made liquor, and 107 bottles of beer were seized, a senior official of the Delhi CEO Office said.

Ahead of the Assembly elections, the Delhi Congress said if it comes to power, it will launch a scheme under which people who save water will get  cashback. Delhi Congress president Shubhash Chopra said if the Congress comes to power, it will give 30 paise per litre water saved. He said the money will be transferred directly into the bank accounts of people.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he would appeal to the Election Commission to allow the Central government to offer more welfare schemes and funds to the city in the Budget. Speaking to the media, Kejriwal said Delhi is going to the polls on February 8 and the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is imposed, so, no fresh policies can be announced till the elections are over.
